I know plenty of people with good grades or genius IQs that can't seem to function in normal social settings. They seem to have no clue as to how to interact with people and often come off as extremely rude and self-righteous.
I think the best indicator of intelligence is your sense of humor. The abililty to make people laugh (not at you, but with you) is a far better definition of what being intelligent is.
Any ideas on this? What are the true signs of intelligence?
I would agree with you to some extent, but your really talking about two different intelligences. Some value books smarts. Some value street smarts, common sense, or emotional intelligence as you called it.
I would tend to agree with you, that being able to function socially is more important and will take you further in life than a high IQ. But, intelligence tends to be socially defined. So, in certain circles you will get people who encourage books smarts, and in others it will be your emotional intelligence. And then, go to a different country and they may have something completely different that they consider 'intelligence'.What are the true signs of intelligence?
IQ measures a person ability to reason. However,
people have other gifts that can't be measured. For
example, creativity, music, EQ, etc. And, there are qualities, things like, determination and charisma. Everyone has
a mixture of IQ, gifts and qualities.

i think it is very easy to say EQ is more important while you are infront of your computer, watching tv, playing your nintendo... i wonder how many of the stuff we use in our dayly life were actually designed or built by funny social dumbs.

I think the adaptibility in new environments, flexibility in situations and problem-solving and efficiency or the ability to pick soemthing up quickly.

It's also how you think not what you think:

very simple, IQ is how clever you are as in learning new skills, EQ is how you interact with people.
2 things is different.
EQ is important if you are working with people.
IQ is important if you are working with skills, knowledge (e.g. research)
without high IQ people, you will not be typing here.

smarts
One giveaway of high intelligence is baldness. The brain actually grows so large that it pushes the hair right off the head!
Intelligence is a measure of both book smarts and people smarts. I would also accept your theory that having a sense of humor is a good indicator of intelligence.
Well....
You need to fall somewhere between a humorous idiot and a mute genius. IQ tests don't measure other important intelligence factors, and should be used only in conjunction with other attributes if you were trying to determine somebody's intelligence. Book smarts does count, as does street smarts, your ability to speak and relay your ideas, your ability to put your thoughts into words.....etc
one's resoursefulness.
Your right. Sense of humor is a very good indicator of intellectual ability. Another one is the ability to talk to just about anyone, about anything, at just about any level and leave the encounter feeling good about it.
Reasoning outside of the proverbial box in an associative extract fashion is also a good indicator as well.
Well, true intellegance is when people realize we are all idiots no matter what.... humor is a form of intelegance, while mathmatical and languge smarts is another form of intellegance. So there is no true one form of intellegance, there are many different forms, but once somebody realizes we are all stupid, then, true intellegance will emerge.
Ethics and morals also demonstrate a high intelligence in coordination with emotional maturity and conscious. The ability to think things through before you do them to avoid any bad consequences is an intelligent thing.
That is soo true!!! So many people are ';book smart'; w/ absolutely NO common sense, in my opinion if u can't take care of yourself BY YOURSELF then u're not intelligent, to me a true measure of being a genius is having the ability to relate to most people, being responsible/ taking responsilbility for your actions whether good or bad, handling your finances no matter your salary, feeling good about yourself and making others feel the same! Anyone can make good grades in school if the material is only memorized but can u think for yourself??? once school is over, can u think for yourself if a person takes school/ book knowledge and uses it for good and applying that knowledge so that u can THINK for yourself then i say that's an intelligent person! Can the person think for themselves is the point i'm trying to make!!!??? That's the ultimate true sign of intelligence!!!
A good sign of intelligence is someone who is unselfish and makes sacrifices for others.
Asking good questions and challenging the answer if not satisfied.
I would say intelligence is indicated by several factors. A person's education contributes, but that only goes as far as their field of expertise. A person's emotional intel is necessary too, but that only goes as far as human interaction.
A true indicator of a person's intelligence is their balance between the two factors. If someone has too much educational and a lack of emotional, they may be very pompous and bragging about their intelligence. If someone has too much emotional intelligence, than they may seem a bit compulsive, obnoxious, maybe even loud. However, I believe it requires great intelligence to maintain a decent balance. A person with a great balance is able to communicate well with others, and understands at least some of the taboos of life, while able to give information on necessary things, not roll around the information you need to know in the workplace.
Intelligence manifests itself in different forms. Michael Jordan was a genius at basketball. Einstein was a genius at physics. Norman Rockwell was a genius at capturing Americana through painting. My father-in-law was a master at building things out of wood or metal. That is also intelligence. People with quick wits are very intelligent . However, don't denigrate scholarship. The ivy halls are lined with people who contribute a great deal to society. Nor would I place intelligences in spheres of importance. Appreciate them all for what they are.
I think that IQ and EQ are both important, though in very different ways. In one extreme, a person with a very high IQ may have a lower EQ, but there are also plenty of people out there who are more balanced in their scores on either.
The world needs a mix of types of people, and that's what makes the world go round!
To me an intellectually smart guy with a sense of humor is the optimal. But when it comes down to the A+ guy or the one who can make me laugh at the end of the day, I'll take the one who can make me laugh any day!
einstein couldnt count change to ride the bus....he couldnt do basic simple mathematic equations and yet he was a genius........Ive found that geniuses may be superior in some things but completely dysfunctional in other settings....but the same things go for people who do not have a high iQ but function very well in human emotions, friendships and social wisdom
