I recently rescued a stray pitbull puppy. He is 8 months old and have named him Sonny. He is incredibly sweet and gets along with everyone he meets and other animals. I would love to use him (I hate the way that sounds) to educate people about the breed and show them how they really are in the right hands. What I mean, is I would like to take him to senior homes, children's hospitals/orphanage s, public events (not necessarily ones for dogs), etc and let people interact with him while I hand out information and talk to them about the breed.
Does anyone know how I can get involved like this?
I live in Alabama. How to educate people about pitbulls?
First I have to say, thank you for 1 - saving a life, and a ';pit bull'; at that, which a lot of people wouldn't even consider helping, and 2 - getting involved and trying to help these amazing dogs! : ) I'm always so happy to hear about people who want to join the fight to help save the ';pit bull'; breeds! : ) My husband and I have owned 3 ';pit bulls';.. Brooklyn (in my picture) our male American Pit Bull Terrier, Destiny is our female American Pit Bull Terrier/American Staffordshire Terrier mix and Jayda is our female American Pit Bull Terrier. We have dedicated our lives to helping to educate others on these great dogs, and to fighting BSL.
The very first thing you need to do, other than being a responsible ';pit bull'; owner, is do as much research on ';pit bulls'; as you can. You need to know everything you can remember about these dogs, you will most likely have to answer some crazy questions. You need to be able to dispel myths and tell people what the truth is. You also need to be able to show people, through your dog, how loving, gentle, intelligent, loyal, obedient, eager to please, etc, a properly trained and socialized ';pit bull'; can be. What you want to do, going to the hospitals, senior homes, etc, is great! However, you have to start at the beginning and work your way up. I'm not really saying you have to wait to do things like that, it doesn't really take a whole lot of time to learn what you need to know about these dogs, but you will definitely want to know everything you possibly can before going into these places where I'm sure people will have some questions for you.
Anyway, all that being said, one of the first things you'll need to know is that ';pit bull'; is not a breed of dog. Yes, some people that own American Pit Bull Terriers will just say ';pit bull'; for short, but the over-whelming majority of the time, when you hear someone say they own a ';pit bull';, they just don't know what a ';pit bull'; is. ';Pit bull'; is a term used to group 3 breeds, the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), the American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffie). There is SO much I could tell you about these breeds, like the fact that the APBT and the AmStaff are basically the same breed, just separate strands. The UKC recognizes the APBT but not the AmStaff and the AKC recognizes the AmStaff but not the APBT. However, many APBTs will be duel registered as APBTs with the UKC and then as AmStaffs with the AKC, and vice versa. But, I don't want my answer to get cut short, so if you have any questions about my answer, or any questions about anything else, please feel free to message me on here or e-mail me at PitBullMommie122106@yahoo.com and I would love to help you however I can! : )
Moving on though, here are several of my favorite ';pit bull'; websites. They have tons of good info, including info on ';pit bull'; myths and the truth, info on hero ';pit bulls';, info on how to be a responsible ';pit bull'; owner, info on the history of the breeds, etc, etc, etc.

Another good thing is this website.. http://atts.org/ This is the American Temperament Testing Society website. If you go to ';Breed Statistics'; it will have what all the different breeds scored. That's a good things to know because you can tell people that all of the ';pit bull'; breeds test as good, if not better, than most popular family breeds, including the Golden Retriever! : )
Okay, if you couldn't tell, it's hard for me to stop talking about ';pit bulls'; once I get started! lol! I am SO passionate about these dogs and helping to educate other on them. I really could go on and on, but to actually get to your question.. I don't really know a whole lot about how you should go about seeing if you can get your dog into some of these places, like the hospitals and seniors homes. I would suggest you first of all, call some of these places and ask them. They might require that your dog pass the CGS program before you can bring him to their hospital, or whatever the place is. http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/program.cf鈥?/a> I'm also sure they will want to know that your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations and everything, and you might have to show them a health certificate from your vet. Again though, I'm not sure about all of this, but just thinking about it, it makes sense to me that they would require those things. Call the places you are interested in working with and they will tell you everything you need to know, I am sure of it.
As far as the information that you're going to hand out, how are you going to go about doing that? If you don't mind me asking? The reason I ask is because I have been wanting to make up some type of pamphlets, or fliers, or something, with ';pit bull'; info on them and hand them out to random people, but I don't know what I should really do. As you can see, I'm not good at keeping things short and sweet, I want to teach everyone every little thing I know about these breeds! lol! For the last several years, ever since my husband and I got our first APBT, I have been trying to help teach people about these breeds, but I do a lot of that online and I'd like to start actually talking to people face to face about these dogs.
Anyway, I hope this helps, and again, please feel free to message me or e-mail me with any questions that you think I might be able to help you with. I really wish you and your pup the very best, and again, thank you so much! : )How to educate people about pitbulls?
bred to be nasty for so many years....sad, but they are seen as dangerous dogs, I think some people still are attracted to these dogs for that reason and that reason alone......I'm in Australia and so often you hear of this breed attacking children, other dogs and adults going to the aid of victim......As for taking him to see people in homes or public events, I don't think that would be openly accepted...just in case........
Pit Bulls make excellent therapy dogs! I've used mine in the past to help insecure dogs and taken him to hospitals. You will want to contact your local hospitals human resources section, the local seniors home, etc. and ask how they feel about having you and your dog come in. Make sure that your dog is used to strange places, groups of people and children before you try to take him. As well as calm and quiet. Good luck!!
i doubt that you will ceasar millan trying to do that, and with all his tv coverage , he still struggling ,
if it was another breed of aggressive dog like doberman or rottweiller do you see it having any difference ?
i live in ca but sense he is a puppy i think he will be fine. just be careful with the seniors. my bff has a boxer and she is extremely sweet!
Propably not because people look at pit bulls as an aggressive breed which their not i have three myself. I've tryed myself but people don't want pitbulls around because they always think they would turn on someone. I'm sorry though
maybe go to petsmart or petco and ask to get involved in how to educate people abt pitbulls
btw love the nameSONNY!!!!!
