We are picking up a six and a half week old Boston Terrier puppy today. We are going to be with family for Thanksgiving and were looking forward to introducing the puppy to the other family members.
I asked the breeder if the puppies were up to date on their shots and she told me they weren't shipped to her on time, so they will need to be given shots by the vet which we are going to see on Monday (today is Friday).
She said we should keep the puppy away from other people touching him a lot but we are going to be with family (about another 6 or 8 people besides my wife and myself) and I see that as being kind of difficult.
Are we OK having other people around this puppy even though it won't be getting its shots until Monday? She said the shots usually take a week to go into effect.
Also, my parents have an adult greyhound (about 14 years old). Should the puppy be kept away from the greyhound or would it be safe to allow the two to 'interact'?
Obviously I'm concerned for the health of the puppy, but I'm not sure how dangerous it is to have a few people interact with him around the holidays. Please let me know your opinions. Thanks!New puppy, shots, and being around other people and other dogs?
You should be concerned.. You are getting a puppy that is far too young to be away from his mom yet.. So are getting a puppy from someone with know experience or knowledge when it comes to breeding a quality litter.
No one would sell a puppy and allow it to go to it's new home for a holiday occasion. Good breeders keep their puppies til the holiday and commotion is over.
You should leave the puppy w/ the breeder til after Thanksgiving. Puppy is too young to go thru all that, with the commotion, new people, noise and a strange dog.
Puppy needs to be fully vaccinated before you trot her all over town.
You should be concerned about the puppy.. But you should be concerned enough that you buy the puppy from someone who would not allow a puppy to go to a new home yet.. You are starting off wrong.. Buy from a good breeder.. Not one who doesn't care where their puppies go and don't let them go so young.
New puppy, shots, and being around other people and other dogs?
Basically this shot for the puupy is to keep it protected against diseases and infections it may pick up. Puppies can easily pick this up from dirty hands, where they walk and from other dogs. So i do advice for the puppy to be kept away from the greyhound but I would think it was alright for your family to say hello to the puppy.
6.5 weeks is too young to seperate a puppy from its mother. Normal time is 10-12 weeks. Puppy (and you) will suffer from this premature gesture. Puppy's development will be at risk.
IF you're going to pull the puppy from its mother anyway, then it should be kept indoors, warm, and away from other dogs and people until he has all his shots.
I would be more worried about worms. All puppies are born with worms and need to be de-wormed a.s.a.p. I would keep the puppy away from other dogs until its up to date with shots, etc just to be on the safe side.
Pick the puppy up in two weeks when its old enough to go home with you. Taking home a puppy this young is harmful for the dog, it creates behavioral problems. If you're so concerned with the health of the dog, I wouldn't go get it today.
after the puppy has its shots keep him/her in for two weeks when potty training use pads or newspaper also after the next set of shots keep in for a week or so and then when the vet says so you can let him out but any concerns at all consult your vet
Honestly I've never heard of that except when they are in their first few weeks. If you touch them in the first few weeks the mom might not take to them, but he is weaned and ready for a home. I don't see why you have to wait until their shots before letting people around him. The only advice I was given with my pup was to keep him out of the dirt until he got his parvo vaccine.
I have never heard of quarantining your pup, unless the puppy is sick. I would make sure you get in writing that the puppy was healthy.
Don't worry about it the puppy should be socialized with people and other pets its better for them.
As far as the shots if the puppy was advertised with shots for the price you paid I would renegotiate the amount in which you paid for the puppy. If the breeder is in a rush to push the puppies off before shots she doesn't really have the puppies best interest in mind. She's also getting rid of the pup way too early 8 weeks is normal. I would be concerned about the breeder and you may want references from others she has sold to before you truly buy this pup.
I'm not real sure why she's suggesting to basically quarantine your puppy that's pretty odd.
Most Vets cringe when people buy pets during the Holiday season. The stress on your puppy (especially at 6 1/2 weeks, most good breeders wait until at least 8) with a new environment, noise, %26amp; a lot of people is fairly large (socialization is one thing but not the Chaos of a family holiday get together).
Your puppy also probably has worms, most do when they come from breeder (first time you take the pup into a vet they will get a stool sample) and will need other shots (primarily to protect the puppy, not humans).
