How do people interact with the environment to create a oil spill?

HEY!

Ok, couple of questions, and I can't find answers for them. Sooo, here they are!:

How have humans interacted with the environment to create oil spills and why?

Where do oil spills occur most often and why?

If you possibly can...:

Identify people on each side of oil spills. (If there is another side)

From my limited knowledge, oil spills most commonly occur when ships carrying large amounts of oil are damaged at sea, causing the oil to spill into the ocean. I'm not sure what types of damages must be incurred, but it seems like they'd have to be pretty severe, or else the oil must not be contained very well.

There is really only one side to this problem, the people responsible for the spill. The other side is the environment, which can eventually have an impact on all of us. Another side can be considered the people that help clean up after the spill, but this isn't quite ';the other side';, it's a side that is created because of the incident. Also, the people responsible for the spill (oil and freighter companies?) are forced to aid in the clean-up process, so they'd pretty much be on both sides.
