Is pride only a virtue in Western countries?

In many countries in Africa and Asia, modesty is a virtue. Although these countries have national pride, they do flock to people whose pride or arrogance (depends on how you view pride) shows in the way they talk, walk, and interact with people. Do you think this is true and if it is, why?Is pride only a virtue in Western countries?
I think a lot of the conflict concerning the ';pride'; of Westerners is just a difference in cultural expression.

Westerners (well, Australians - they are the only ones I really know) DO believe in humility and modesty but they express it differently.

Non-Westerners may perceive our belief in individual self-determination to be based on pride. That may be true in some instances: many human beings to suffer from the sin of pride (until they learn how to overcome it).

However, when people claim to believe in obeying what they are told to do by superiors it then follows that they support a double-standard. If we follow and obey someone out of humility, we are living in a way that confirms that another person is superior to us. If someone else is superior, and expects others to obey without question, then that leader is prideful.

So Westerners combat pride by each individual claiming the right to determine their own destinies. Some people go too far with this, thinking that they can determine their own destinies as well as other people's. This is pride.... but doing this is against what most Westerners value. If we each have individual self-determination, then we have to allow others to have the same = humility.

Modesty is also a strong value in Australian culture. Have you ever heard of the ';Tall poppy syndrome';? In Australia, if you are smart, you are not supposed to tell people who are not as smart as you. This is why nerds hang around together. You can't tell people your happiness in doing well on a test if you got a result that was a lot better than someone else's. To do that might make the other person feel bad. Westerners can be modest, too.Is pride only a virtue in Western countries?
Actually Arabs are so proud of themselves. I'm an Arab, however i try my best to advice people not to be like this. Unfortunately, many societies consider pride a virtue, and this is not acceptable in Islam.

Modesty must be a virtue. It is the way by which humans avoid indecency and shame. It is also a way by which women are chosen for their personality rather than their beauty.

I dislike the proud although sometimes i feel that i'm proud of something. I try my best to suppress such feelings.

[17:37] Quran: You shall not walk proudly on earth - you cannot bore through the earth, nor can you be as tall as the mountains.
Good question. Here's my take on it.

I think true modesty means having healthy self-esteem. Humility is not humiliation. Modesty means being humble, but being humble means we have the courage to acknowledge what we do right (with God's help) and what we do wrong. Arrogance is usually a sign of poor self-esteem, too.

With healthy self-esteem we recognize our strengths and weaknesses, but we don't dwell on them. We feel empowered by what we can do and we give thanks to God for all the gifts that make our strengths possible.
Pride transcends culture and regionalism. National pride is not a quantifiable thing. Pride really is a result of a nature that says ';I am good';. It blinds the mind to be able to see ourselves in our true light. That is why the Bible says that God resist the prideful. It goes even further to say that our heart are deceitfully wicked, so much so that one can not even know how wicked. This line of reasoning can be proving through a self examination by the 10 commandments. Few people will really admit that they are wretched people before God's standard.
I don't believe that Western countries view pride as a virtue. We are a Christian nation and pride is one of the seven deadly sins. National pride is something different. We love our country and our freedoms and believe that all should be free (I am speaking as an American). Don't confuse confidence with pride. I believe there is a distinct difference between the two. Americans also happen to be the most charitable country in the world.
Proud is in thier national anthem in USA.

The roots are also evil because those who founded the country stole guidance and bartered it for error. They plan and Allah plans and the bigger plan wins.. who do you think won?

Allah SWT hates the proud, anything proud is cursed and Al Jinn in evil are allowed to surround it.
It isn't pride. It is Nationalism and Jingoism. That is what leads the West to believe they are superior to all else, hence World War II and America's stance that it believes it can boss any nation around.

Supremacy = Mass murdering of innocent civilians worldwide.
Arrogance is not a virtue in Western countries either, and there is a division in the West between those attracted to the arrogant and those repulsed.
what?!? have you never heard the saying that people in western countries say---pride comes before a fall.

is generalisation and ignorance only a virtue in your country?
Not all kinds of pride are considered virtuous out here in the ';West.';

Pride in one's accomplishments or in one's country is one thing...

Pride as in vanity...well...You know that old saying: ';Pride comes before the fall.';
People have different ideas on pride and modesty.
There is pride among many people in the world in my opinion.
No not all westerners are like that. Many people in the west are modest!

And who said pride is a virtue?
