I struggle with social anxiety which makes it hard to interact with people. I need to find a job, NOW, but this is standing in my way. Even when I interview I am so nervous the employer usually never calls again, even though originally they were ';blown away'; by my resume %26amp; experience. Once I get working, I'm fine, but until then I'm only getting more desperate, broke and anxious. What do I do?How do I get a job when my nerves get in the way???
Outside of medication, I can only make a few suggestions:
1) go through the interview in your head - imagine what will happen during the interview before you actually go in, and when you get to stressful parts, stop and think about something relaxing, then start up again - kind of like how athletes mentally imagine preparing for an event - will help you feel relaxed
2) no coffee or soft drinks for at least 2 hours before the interview - you are agitated enough, you don't need caffeine
3) remember that you are qualified for the job, so there's nothing you could be 'caught' on that you need to stress about like someone who faked their resume
4) adjust your perspective on the interview - see the employer as someone who needs your help - which they do. Currently, they are all under stress compensating for the open position, taking on extra work until the job is filled. They are also panicked that they will hire someone incompetent who they don't like, and since you are neither of those you are the answer they need, so get in there and help them out!
5) if you can, go to where the interview will happen the day before, so you know where you are going - you don't need ';I'm lost!'; stress the day of the interview. I don't mean inside their actual offices where they will see you, just to their building or general area
6) research the company so you have items to talk about to show you are interested in what they do
7) practice your interview skills with your friends or acquaintancesHow do I get a job when my nerves get in the way???
